Bahama Mama
Bahama Mama: The Disputed Origins of a Tropical Classic
The Bahama Mama's origins are shrouded in mystery. Born in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas in 1943, Slade has had a long and illustrious bartending career having started in 1961 at the Nassau Beach Hotel and the Pink Elephant Night Club Got Rum? Magazine. This is where he claims to have created this cocktail in 1963 for three women at his bar who wanted something fruity they'd never had before Difford's Guide.
However, on his website the author says he started working and making cocktails at the Nassau Beach Hotel in 1961, but the Bahama Mama was already a popular cocktail in the 1950s Travel Distilled. Interestingly, the dating here does eliminate another possible origin story: the claimed creation of the cocktail by Bahamian bartender Oswald Greenslade of the Nassau Beach Hotel, who started work in 1961 The Daily Meal.
He created the drink in 1963 at the Pink Elephant Night Club and named it after Maureen Duvalier. Maureen Duvalier, who was also known as Calypso Mama, became a global ambassador for The Bahamas Got Rum? Magazine. In 1958 Ms Duvalier led 25 women, along with a group of men, down Bay Street in the Junkanoo Parade. She made history as the first woman with a Junkanoo group Sweet Escape.
