MEXICAN 75
The Mexican 75: A Tequila Twist on the French Classic
The Mexican 75 emerged as a variation of the classic French 75 cocktail, which dates back to World War I.
While no single creator is credited, the drink represents the modern trend of adapting classic cocktail templates with different base spirits, according to Liquor.com.
The cocktail combines tequila with fresh lime juice, simple syrup, and champagne or sparkling wine. Substituting tequila for gin and lime for lemon creates a drink that pairs tequila's agave character with citrus tartness and champagne's effervescence, as noted in Difford's Guide.
The Mexican 75 gained popularity in craft cocktail bars during the 2000s and 2010s as bartenders explored tequila in elegant, celebratory formats. The drink appeals to those seeking sophisticated tequila cocktails beyond the Margarita.
