KAMIKAZE

The Kamikaze: A 1970s Shot Sensation

The Kamikaze emerged during the 1970s, though its exact creator remains disputed. Some sources credit Linden, New Jersey bartender Tony Lauriano with creating the drink in the mid-1970s, while others claim it originated at a naval base in Japan, according to Liquor.com.

The cocktail combines vodka with triple sec and fresh lime juice in equal or near-equal proportions. This simple formula creates a tart, citrus-forward drink that works both as a shot and as a cocktail served up in a martini glass, as noted in Difford's Guide.

The name "Kamikaze" references Japanese suicide pilots from World War II, suggesting the drink's potency and the bold act of consuming it quickly as a shot. The Kamikaze became one of the most popular shots of the 1980s and 1990s, according to Punch.

The drink's popularity led to numerous variations and flavored versions. The Kamikaze is essentially a vodka-based version of the Margarita, replacing tequila with vodka.
