CAPE CODDER

The Cape Codder: A New England Classic

The Cape Codder emerged in the 1940s, created to promote Ocean Spray cranberry juice, which was produced in Massachusetts cranberry bogs.

The drink was named after Cape Cod, the Massachusetts peninsula famous for cranberry cultivation, according to Liquor.com. The cocktail combines vodka with cranberry juice and a squeeze of lime. This simple formula creates a tart, refreshing drink where cranberry's tartness complements vodka's clean character, as noted in Difford's Guide.

The Cape Codder gained popularity during the 1960s and 1970s as both vodka and cranberry juice became staples in American bars. The drink is sometimes called a "Vodka Cranberry" and spawned numerous variations including the Sea Breeze and Bay Breeze, which add grapefruit or pineapple juice, according to Punch.
