Rum Swizzle: Bermuda's National Drink Since the 1930s

The rum swizzle originated in the Caribbean during the mid-18th century amid the sugar plantation economy of the West Indies Grokipedia.

In his 1909 book, Beverages, Past and Present: An Historical Sketch of Their Production, Brotherhood Winery owner Edward R. Emerson asserted that rum swizzles originated on the Caribbean island of Saint Kitts Wikipedia. Frederick Albion Ober's 1920's book 'A Guide to the West Indies, Bermuda and Panama' gives one of the first recorded insights into the origins of the stick itself The Vintage Inn.

However, Correia asserts that its origins "as it pertains to Bermuda" date back to 1932, when the Outerbridge family, a prominent local family with roots on the island going as far back as the 1600s, opened the Swizzle Inn in Bailey's Bay Smithsonian Magazine. The drink is named after its mixing method using a swizzle stick from the Swizzle Stick tree (Quararibea turbinata) TASTE cocktails, which creates a frothy texture when rotated rapidly between the palms.


RECIPE:

2 oz dark rum (Gosling's Black Seal)

2 oz gold rum

2 oz pineapple juice

2 oz orange juice

½ oz fresh lemon juice

½ oz falernum

2 dashes Angostura bitters

Method:

  1. Add all ingredients to pitcher with crushed ice

  2. Swizzle with swizzle stick until foamy head develops

  3. Pour into glasses

  4. Garnish with orange slice
