TEQUINI
The Tequini: Tequila's Answer to the Martini
The Tequini emerged during the mid-20th century as bartenders began experimenting with tequila in classic cocktail templates.
While no single creator is credited, the drink represents the broader trend of creating spirit variations of the Martini, according to Liquor.com. The cocktail follows the classic Martini formula of spirit and dry vermouth, sometimes with bitters. Using tequila instead of gin or vodka creates a different character, with tequila's agave notes providing earthiness compared to gin's botanicals or vodka's neutrality, as noted in Difford's Guide.
The Tequini gained renewed interest during the craft cocktail revival when bartenders explored tequila in sophisticated, spirit-forward formats. The drink works best with quality blanco or reposado tequila that can stand up to the Martini's minimalist template.
RECIPE:
2.5 oz tequila (blanco or reposado)
1/2 oz dry vermouth
1 dash orange bitters (optional)
Lemon twist or olive for garnish
Method:
Add tequila, dry vermouth, and bitters (if using) to a mixing glass with ice.
Stir until well-chilled, about 30 seconds.
Strain into a chilled martini glass.
Garnish with lemon twist or olive.
