THE CHI-CHI
The Chi-Chi: A Vodka Piña Colada
The Chi-Chi emerged in the 1960s or 1970s as a vodka variation of the classic Piña Colada, though its exact creator remains unknown.
The drink represents the trend of substituting vodka into popular rum-based tropical cocktails during vodka's rise to dominance in American bars, according to Liquor.com. The cocktail combines vodka with pineapple juice and coconut cream (Coco López). This formula creates a tropical, creamy drink nearly identical to the Piña Colada except for the base spirit, as noted in Difford's Guide.
The name "Chi-Chi" has unclear origins, though some sources suggest it's a playful, memorable name fitting with tropical cocktail culture. The Chi-Chi is typically served blended with ice, creating a frozen drink similar to frozen Piña Coladas.
