VODKA SOUR
The Vodka Sour: A Neutral Take on the Classic Sour
The Vodka Sour emerged as a variation of the classic Whiskey Sour, which dates back to the 1860s. As vodka gained popularity in American bars during the mid-20th century, bartenders began substituting it into the traditional sour formula, according to Liquor.com.
The cocktail follows the classic sour template of spirit, citrus, and sweetener. Using vodka creates a cleaner profile where lemon's tartness dominates without whiskey's oak or grain character, as noted in Difford's Guide.
The Vodka Sour has remained a staple variation, though it's less popular than whiskey-based versions. Many modern recipes include egg white for added texture and foam.
RECIPE:
2 oz vodka
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
1 egg white (optional)
Lemon wheel and cherry for garnish
Method:
Add vodka, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white (if using) to a shaker.
If using egg white, dry shake for 15 seconds first.
Add ice and shake vigorously until well-chilled.
Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
Garnish with lemon wheel and cherry.
