Affinity

The Affinity: A Victorian Era Classic

The Affinity cocktail first appeared in print in the 1890s, making it one of the oldest recorded Scotch cocktails.

The drink represents the late Victorian era's sophisticated approach to cocktail-making, when bartenders balanced multiple vermouths with spirits, according to Difford's Guide.

The cocktail uses equal parts Scotch, sweet vermouth, and dry vermouth, creating a balanced, wine-forward drink. The combination allows the Scotch's malt character to shine while both vermouths add botanical complexity and sweetness, as noted in Liquor.com.

The Affinity belongs to the family of vermouth-heavy cocktails popular before Prohibition, when American drinking culture favored lower-proof, aperitif-style drinks. The cocktail fell into obscurity throughout most of the 20th century but experienced revival during the craft cocktail movement when bartenders rediscovered classic recipes that showcase vermouth.
