Dark 'n' Stormy: Bermuda's Trademarked Rum Cocktail

The Dark 'n' Stormy was invented in Bermuda just after World War I, according to Gosling Brothers Wikipedia. British sailors on shore leave at the island were fans of Gosling's Black Seal Rum and developed the cocktail by mixing the dark liquor with homemade ginger beer Smithsonian Magazine. The drink originated in the ginger beer factory run as a subsidiary to the Royal Naval Officer's Club in Bermuda Goslings.

The name allegedly came from an old sailor who observed that the drink was "the color of a cloud only a fool or a dead man would sail under" GoslingsSmithsonian Magazine. The Gosling family had established their rum business in Bermuda after James Gosling's ship, the Mercury, arrived in Bermuda in 1806 after 91 days at sea when their charter expired CNN. The family entered rum production in 1857 and developed Gosling's Black Seal rum, named for the black wax used to seal champagne bottles collected from the Royal Navy Officers Mess during World War I The Bermudian.

In the United States, "Dark 'n Stormy" has been a registered trademark of Gosling Brothers Ltd since 1991 Wikipedia. In the 1970s, Gosling's trademarked the cocktail after spending heavily on promotion and other rum companies began promoting similar serves Classbarmag. The drink must legally be made with Gosling's Black Seal rum to be called a Dark 'n' Stormy.


RECIPE:

2 oz Gosling's Black Seal rum

6 oz ginger beer

Lime wedge

Method:

  1. Fill highball glass with ice

  2. Pour ginger beer

  3. Float rum on top

  4. Stir gently

  5. Garnish with lime wedge
