Old Pal

rye
Red-amber Old Pal cocktail with an orange twist on a steel table against blue tiles

Rye whiskey, Campari and dry vermouth make the Old Pal a crisp, bitter choice for a stirred cocktail. The recipe here uses Gary Crunkleton’s whiskey-led 2:1:1 proportions, as published by Imbibe, rather than an equal-parts pour. An orange twist adds fragrance above the red-amber drink.

Dry vermouth is the detail to check before you begin. Reaching for sweet vermouth changes the character substantially. Keep the bottle refrigerated after opening, use a chilled coupe, and let the stirring supply both cooling and dilution. There is no citrus juice to shake into this one.

Ingredients

Makes one cocktail.

  • 2 oz rye whiskey
  • 1 oz Campari
  • 1 oz dry vermouth
  • Orange twist, for garnish

Method

  1. Measure the rye, Campari and dry vermouth into a mixing glass filled with ice.
  2. Stir until the mixture is thoroughly cold, then strain into a chilled coupe.
  3. Express the orange twist over the surface and place it on the rim.
