Souplantation Plans a California Return in 2027

Souplantation is planning to return to California in 2027 with a restaurant in Fountain Valley. The announcement gives the soup-and-salad buffet’s revival a new geographic step, following Sweet Tomatoes locations in Arizona and Florida. It is a future opening, not a restaurant diners can visit in California today.
Eater LA reported on October 7 that a company representative confirmed the return under the Souplantation name at the former Fountain Valley location on Talbert Avenue. Nation’s Restaurant News also reported the plan, saying the California restaurant will be company owned and that the company has no plans to franchise.
The distinction between names matters. Souplantation was the California identity of the concept known elsewhere as Sweet Tomatoes. The original system closed in 2020. The revival began in Tucson in 2024, and the current company website describes two operating locations. This is a gradual rebuilding effort rather than the restoration of the former nationwide footprint.
For diners, the appeal of a buffet is partly control: a table can choose different combinations while sharing a common format. That can be especially useful for groups whose appetites differ. But a familiar name does not yet answer practical questions about this opening, including its eventual price, hours and exact opening date.
Our industry takeaway is that a revival has two jobs. It must preserve enough recognizable detail to satisfy returning guests, while operating as a workable restaurant in the present. Nostalgia can prompt a first visit; replenishment, cleanliness, food quality and a smooth dining experience have to support the next one.
The measured expansion also makes this different from a broad claim that buffets are suddenly surging everywhere. One announced restaurant cannot establish a national trend. What it does provide is a concrete test of whether an established concept can reconnect with its original regional audience.
For now, California fans have a confirmed plan and a year to watch. Our industry news archive follows restaurant openings, closures and the operating choices behind them.
