Japanese Sweet Potato Rice

White short-grain rice with yellow sweet potato cubes, purple skin and black sesame

When the main dish needs most of your attention, a rice dish can provide the seasonal element without adding another sauce to manage. Satsumaimo gohan brings Japanese sweet potatoes into the same bowl as rice, making the side feel considered on its own.

Namiko Hirasawa Chen’s version at Just One Cookbook combines short-grain white rice with Japanese sweet potatoes and finishes with gomashio, a sesame-and-salt mixture. The pale flesh and purple skin of those potatoes give the finished bowl its distinctive appearance.

A quiet center for the meal

Our serving suggestion is to set out individual bowls alongside a simple egg dish and a sharp, crunchy vegetable side. Keep additional dressings separate so diners can enjoy the rice without covering it in sauce. A small bowl also works as part of a larger shared brunch spread.
