Record Restaurant Sales Still Leave a Tough Operating Picture
The National Restaurant Association’s 2026 outlook projects nationwide industry sales of $1.55 trillion. The more revealing figure may be the forecast for growth after inflation: 1.3 percent.
In its February report summary, the association described an industry facing persistent cost pressure, uneven traffic and household budgets under strain. It also projected roughly 100,000 additional jobs, bringing industry employment to 15.8 million. These are forecasts from the report, not final results for the year.
The Brunch God view
A growing national sales total does not tell you whether an individual dining room is thriving. For a neighborhood operator, repeat visits, dependable service and a menu that guests understand can matter more than the headline number.
For diners, the outlook helps explain why restaurants keep revisiting value and the overall experience. Value can mean a satisfying portion, a clear menu or a meal that feels worth the occasion. It does not have to mean an endless series of discounts.
